Hare Krishna Peanut Chutney is a creamy and flavorful condiment, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This rich chutney combines simple, wholesome ingredients to create a delicious addition to your meals. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, cooking and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw peanuts
  • 2 tablespoons grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  • 2 green chilies (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • A small piece of tamarind (or 1 teaspoon tamarind paste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

For Tempering:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon split urad dal
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • A few curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Roast Peanuts:
    • Dry roast the raw peanuts in a pan on medium heat until they turn golden brown. Allow them to cool and then remove the skins.
  2. Blend Ingredients:
    • In a blender, combine roasted peanuts, grated coconut, green chilies, cumin seeds, tamarind, and salt. Add a little water to aid blending and blend until you get a smooth consistency. Adjust the water for desired thickness.
  3. Prepare Tempering:
    • Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add split urad dal and let turn 1 or 2 shades darker. Add asafoetida and curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
  4. Combine:
    • Pour the tempering over the blended chutney.
  5. Serve:
    • Mix well and serve with idli, dosa, or any preferred dish.

  • Adjust Spices: Adjust the amount of green chilies and salt to suit your taste preferences.
  • Serving Tip: Serve the peanut chutney immediately or chill in the refrigerator before serving for a refreshing taste.
