Hare Krishna Indian Spiced Buttermilk is a refreshing and cooling beverage, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This delightful buttermilk combines simple, wholesome ingredients to create a versatile addition to your meals. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food and drink to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each drink is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a beverage but a spiritual offering.

  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black salt (kala namak)
  • 1/4 teaspoon regular salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon chaat masala
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • A few fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
  • A few fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • Lemon slice or mint sprig for garnish

Instructions

  1. Mix Buttermilk and Water:
    • In a large bowl or jug, combine the buttermilk and water. Stir well until smoothly blended.
  2. Add Spices:
    • Add roasted cumin powder, black salt, regular salt, chaat masala, and asafoetida to the buttermilk mixture. Stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution of spices.
  3. Add Fresh Herbs:
    • Mix in the finely chopped mint leaves, coriander leaves, and green chili (if using).
  4. Chill:
    • Refrigerate the mixture for about 15–20 minutes to let the flavors meld and serve chilled.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Pour into glasses, garnish with a lemon slice or a sprig of mint if desired, and serve immediately.
