In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, cooking and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup yellow split mung beans
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Mixed vegetables (such as carrots, peas, cauliflower)
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Grains: Rinse the rice and mung beans thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Heat the Ghee: In a large pot, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Sauté until they start to sizzle.
  3. Add Spices: Add the turmeric powder and sauté for another minute.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the rinsed rice and mung beans to the pot and stir well to coat them with the spices.
  5. Add Vegetables: Add the water, salt, and mixed vegetables to the pot. Stir well.
  6. Cook the Kitchari: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the vegetables are tender.
  7. Serve: Garnish with fresh cilantro before offering to Krishna and serve hot. Enjoy your Hare Krishna Vegetable Kitchari!

Notes

  • Adjust Consistency: If you prefer a thicker kitchari, reduce the amount of water. For a more soupy consistency, add extra water as needed.
  • Flavor Enhancements: Add a handful of chopped spinach or other vegetables for added nutrition and flavor.
  • Serving Tip: Serve kitchari with a side of fresh lime or lemon wedges to brighten the flavors.
  • Leftovers: Kitchari can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of water if needed to loosen the consistency.
