Bhakri Recipe

Bhakri Recipe offered to Krishna on a stone thali.

Hare Krishna Bhakri is a rustic and hearty bread, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This bhakri recipe uses millet or sorghum flour to create a bread that is both satisfying and nutritious. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bhakri:

  • 2 cups millet or sorghum flour (250g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water (120 ml), approximately

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine millet or sorghum flour and salt. Gradually add hot water and knead to form a stiff dough. Cover and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Divide Dough: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.
  3. Roll Out Bhakris: Roll out each dough ball into a thick, round bhakri, about 5-6 inches in diameter.
  4. Cook Bhakris: Heat a tawa or flat griddle over medium heat. Place a rolled-out bhakri on the hot tawa. Cook until brown spots appear on both sides, flipping as needed.
  5. Serve Hot: Serve the bhakris hot with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • Variation: Add finely chopped cabbage to the dough for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover bhakris in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat before serving.
