Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup toor dal (pigeon pea lentils)
  • 3/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Toor Dal:
    • Rinse the toor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain.
    • In a pressure cooker, add the soaked toor dal and 2 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles until the dal is soft and mushy. Alternatively, cook the dal in a pot until it is tender.
  2. Prepare the Tempering:
    • In a pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
    • Add asafoetida and sauté for another minute.
  3. Combine and Cook:
    • Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they soften.
    • Add turmeric powder and salt to taste. Mix well.
    • Add the cooked toor dal to the pan and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
    • Offer to Krishna and serve hot with rice or bread.
