Barfi Recipe

Barfi Recipe offered to Krishna, stacked on a simple Indian cutting board.

Hare Krishna Barfi is a sweet and indulgent dessert, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This barfi recipe uses condensed milk, sugar, and ghee to create a dense and flavorful treat that can be enjoyed at any time of day. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Barfi:

  • 1 cup condensed milk (240 ml)
  • 1/2 cup milk powder (60g)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (50g)
  • 1/4 cup ghee (60 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (cashews, almonds)
  • A few strands of saffron (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Barfi Mixture: In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add condensed milk, milk powder, and sugar. Stir continuously, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens and starts to leave the sides of the pan. This process may take about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Flavor the Barfi: Add cardamom powder and saffron strands (if using). Mix well to combine.
  3. Set the Barfi: Grease a square or rectangular dish with ghee. Pour the cooked mixture into the dish and spread it evenly. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top and gently press them into the mixture.
  4. Cool and Cut: Allow the barfi to cool at room temperature until it sets. Once set, cut it into square or diamond-shaped pieces.
  5. Serve at Room Temperature: Serve the barfi at room temperature with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • Variation: Add a layer of grated coconut or chocolate (carob for Hare Krishna diet) for different flavors.
  • Storage: Store any leftover barfi in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
