Hare Krishna Appam is a soft and fluffy pancake, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This appam recipe is a traditional South Indian dish that is both light and satisfying. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

For the Appam:

  • 1 cup raw rice (200g)
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut (30g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup water (120 ml), approximately

Instructions

  1. Soak and Grind Rice: Rinse and soak the rice in water for 4-5 hours. Drain and grind the rice with grated coconut to form a smooth batter. Add water as needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  2. Ferment the Batter: Dissolve the dry yeast in a little warm water and add it to the batter. Stir in salt and sugar. Cover and let the batter ferment for 8 hours or overnight.
  3. Cook Appams: Heat an appam pan or a small non-stick pan over medium heat. Pour a ladleful of batter into the center of the pan and gently swirl the pan to spread the batter. Cover with a lid and cook until the appam is fluffy with a crispy edge.
  4. Serve Hot: Serve the appams hot with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • Variation: Add a little coconut milk to the batter for a richer flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover appam batter in the refrigerator for up to two days. Use as needed.
