This gulab jamun recipe uses milk powder, flour, and sugar to create soft and spongy dough balls soaked in a fragrant syrup that can be enjoyed at any time of day. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

For the Gulab Jamun:

  • 1 cup milk powder (120g)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (30g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon ghee, melted
  • 12 tablespoons milk, or as needed

For the Sugar Syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar (200g)
  • 1/2 cup water (120 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A few strands of saffron (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon rose water (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Gulab Jamun Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine milk powder, flour, and baking soda. Add melted ghee and mix until crumbly. Gradually add milk, a little at a time, and knead until a soft dough forms. The dough should be smooth and not too sticky.
  2. Shape the Dough Balls: Divide the dough into small portions and shape them into smooth, round balls. Ensure there are no cracks on the surface.
  3. Fry the Gulab Jamun: Heat ghee or oil in a deep frying pan over medium-low heat. Fry the dough balls in batches until they are golden brown on all sides. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Prepare the Sugar Syrup: In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil and simmer until the syrup reaches a one-string consistency. Add cardamom powder, saffron strands, and rose water, if using.
  5. Soak the Gulab Jamun: Add the fried gulab jamuns to the warm syrup and let them soak for at least 30 minutes, allowing them to absorb the syrup and become soft.
  6. Serve Warm or at Room Temperature: Serve the gulab jamun warm or at room temperature with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • Variation: Garnish with chopped pistachios or almonds for added texture.
  • Storage: Store any leftover gulab jamuns in the syrup in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
