Plain Puri Recipe offered to Krishna in a decorative kadhai.

Hare Krishna Plain Puri is a simple and satisfying bread, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. This puri recipe uses basic ingredients to create a versatile bread that can be enjoyed at any time of day. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Puri:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (250g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup water (60 ml), approximately
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead to form a stiff dough. Cover and let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Divide Dough: Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape them into balls.
  3. Roll Out Puris: Roll out each dough ball into a small circle, about 4-5 inches in diameter.
  4. Fry Puris: Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully slide a rolled-out puri into the oil. Fry until it puffs up and turns golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  5. Serve Hot: Serve the puris hot with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • Variation: Add a pinch of ajwain (carom seeds) to the dough for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover puris in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat before serving.
