Hare Krishna Kachoris are delightful and flavorful pastries, inspired by the principles of bhakti yoga. These kachoris combine simple, wholesome ingredients to create a delicious addition to your meals. In the tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, preparing and offering food to Krishna is an act of love and devotion, known as bhakti. Each dish is prepared with care, mindfulness, and a pure heart, making it not just a meal but a spiritual offering.

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup ghee or oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Water as needed

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup moong dal or green peas
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Prepare Dough:

  1. Mix Ingredients:
    • In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour, ghee or oil, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Knead Dough:
    • Gradually add water and knead into a firm dough. Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.

Prepare Filling:

  1. Cook Dal/Peas:
    • Boil moong dal or green peas until tender. Drain and mash slightly.
  2. Sauté Spices:
    • In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, fennel seeds, and salt. Sauté for a minute.
  3. Add Dal/Peas:
    • Add the boiled dal or peas to the pan and mix well. Cook for a few minutes and set aside to cool.

Assemble Kachoris:

  1. Divide Dough:
    • Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  2. Roll Out:
    • Roll out each ball into a small circle. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center.
  3. Seal:
    • Bring the edges together to seal the filling inside. Flatten slightly to form a patty.

Cook Kachoris:

  1. Heat Oil:
    • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  2. Fry Kachoris:
    • Carefully slide the kachoris into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  3. Drain:
    • Remove kachoris from oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Serve:

  1. Serve Hot:
    • Serve hot with green chutney or tamarind chutney.

Notes

  • Variation: Use a mixture of lentils for the filling for added flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover kachoris in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.
